National Association of Conservation District's Photo Contest 2008

Glenn County RCD Associate-Director, Jill Egly, Wins Award in National Contest! Congratulations! "A picture can be worth even more than a thousand words. Good photographs can lend a helping hand to numerous projects: they strengthen publicity for a fund-raiser, make a newsletter more appealing and reveal the beauty of wetlands to elementary students. To recognize individuals who use this tool effectively and creatively, NACD and the NACD Auxiliary join forces to host an annual Photo Contest." www.nacdnet.org For additional information visit the NACD website.

Glenn County RCD wins State Award!

The Glenn County Resource Conservation District (RCD) was recently named 2008 Outstanding District of the Year at the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts (CARCD) Annual Meeting in Riverside, California. Every year, the California Organization of District Employees chooses a district that has exhibited honorable efforts in the area of conservation commitment and makes the presentation during the CARCD annual meeting. Glenn County RCD Board President, Mike Landini, and Staff accepted the award on behalf of the entire Board of Directors. “It was a surprise and honor to receive this award of recognition from our peers. Within California, there are 104 Districts, so this speaks highly of our Glenn County RCD”, said Landini. The CARCD, a non-profit organization, is set up to serve the districts of California, offering valuable assistance to organize representation at the state and national levels. The roles of individual RCDs include rendering assistance to private landowners wishing to conserve soil and water and manage their resources on a sustainable basis; acting as a focal point for local conservation efforts, including watershed groups; and sponsoring educational efforts to teach children and adults alike of the importance of conserving resources. Locally, the Glenn County RCD has been involved with a multi-landowner based objective to assess the issues of erosion and non-native invasive plants (Arundo and Tamarisk) on Lower Stony Creek. Accomplishments include the Stony Creek Watershed Assessment, Demonstration Site and Landowner’s Manual, Arundo Mapping Project, Monitoring Program, Permit Coordination Program, 20 acre Arundo Removal Project, Tamarisk Bio-Control Beetle Release, and draft Watershed Restoration Plan. These accomplishments provide significant leverage as the RCD seeks funding on behalf of willing landowners for projects on Lower Stony Creek. In addition to these projects, the RCD is dedicated to providing education and outreach to the community on a variety of resource-related issues. Focusing on the RCD’s ability to play a pivotal role in community awareness, the GCRCD has formed a successful partnership with the Colusa Glenn Subwatershed Program to provide the outreach component of this program. The Glenn County RCD Board of Directors are appointed based on their strengths as active partners in the conservation community and represent a broad spectrum of resource conservation interests and perspectives. Although Board members differ in their interests and conservation philosophies, the structure of a board offers a way to forge coherent conservation policies and programs that balance diverse interests and represent the broader spectrum of opinions within Glenn County. Glenn County RCD Board Members include Mike Landini, President; Mike Yalow, Vice President; Bruce Roundy, Treasurer; Kandi Manhart, Secretary; Donnan Arbuckle, Jerry Ehorn, Lorri Pride and Jim Giachino, Directors. Staff includes Kandi Manhart, District Manager and Claudia Street, Conservation Planner.
