High school student, Dominic Brock, writes “I want to be President of the U.S. someday and, I care about the environment around me/others” on his application to participate in the Glenn County Resource Conservation District’s (RCD) 2014 California Association of Resource Conservation Districts (CARCD) Annual Speak-Off Contest.

Brock, a William Finch Charter School Sophomore, placed first at the local competition, and second at the Sacramento Valley Region of RCDs Speak-Off Contest recently. The Sacramento Valley Region includes Tehama County, Butte County, Glenn County, Colusa County, East Lake County, Yuba County, Sutter County, Yolo County as well as portions of Shasta, Lake, Modoc and Plumas counties.

His prize winning speech on “How can RCDs help address the increasing fuel load in California’s wild lands and the potential for catastrophic wildfire?” was one of the most powerful speeches to be heard by the audience and judges. The competition designed to provide high school students a fun way to learn about our natural resources, gain experience in public speaking and allow conference attendees to hear from our youth regarding their thoughts on conservation is an annual tradition of the RCDs.

Kandi Manhart, RCD Executive Officer, said “Brock did a fabulous job presenting on a tough topic, especially in this time where California is seeing a lot more wildfires. All of the students, including Glenn County RCD second place winner, Reed Koehnen-Hamilton High School, third place winner, Allison Wallace-Orland High School, and participants Lydia M’Gaffee, Ivan Urena-Valdes-Hamilton High School, and Emily Groth-Elk Creek High School did a great job preparing and delivering their speeches at the event which was held at Mendocino National Forest Service in Willows.”
